ADHD waiting list cut by a third in Surrey and Sussex

A new ADHD pathway in Surrey and Sussex has cleared nearly a third of referrals, cutting waiting times and giving patients faster access to assessment and support.

Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust partnered with Well Life Clinic to tackle an unsustainable backlog. Before the pilot launched in September 2025, patients faced waiting up to 17 years for a new referral.

Well Life Clinic trains local GPs — supervised by consultant psychiatrists from the trust — to deliver a flexible, end-to-end pathway for adults waiting for an ADHD assessment. The clinic now sees around 100 patients a month.

Since the launch:

  • 32% of ADHD referrals have been cleared
  • 21% of the ADHD assessment waiting list has been cleared
  • the most complex patients can now be seen more quickly by specialist clinicians

At £1,200 per patient, the pathway is significantly cheaper than independent right-to-choose providers and is designed to be scaled up.

A psychiatrist said: “From a clinician’s perspective, the model delivers a step-change in productivity without compromising quality.”

One patient’s comment: “It gave me hope when I had given up.”
