Rapid mental health support helps staff stay in work

The North East and North Cumbria Staff Mental Health and Wellbeing Hub gives 175,000 staff across the NHS, social care and voluntary sectors in its area fast access to support.

Staff can self-refer to the hub and receive a response on the same day.

Within 7 days, they are offered a 60 to 90 minute assessment with an experienced mental health professional, followed by up to 3 further sessions with no waits.

Appointments are available by video, phone or face-to-face.

For complex needs, therapies including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and counselling are available immediately, alongside specialist psychiatry and addiction support.

Monthly referrals have grown from 50 to more than 200 and early evaluations show significant improvements in anxiety and depression. 91% of staff say the hub helped them stay in or return to work and 99% would recommend it to a colleague.

The hub is now developing a long-term funding model and supporting other regions to adopt the approach.
