Electronic prescription service (EPS)

Version1.2, 25 Feb 2025

This guidance is part of the Patient record and information systems’ functionality section of the Good practice guidelines for GP electronic patient records.

The Electronic prescription service (EPS) allows prescribers to send prescriptions electronically to a dispenser (such as a community pharmacy) of the patient’s choice. This makes the prescribing and dispensing process more efficient and convenient for patients and staff.  EPS supports the NHS England commitment to Digital first primary care, reducing the need for patients to attend practices in person to order or collect repeat prescriptions.

The functionality of the EPS has been enhanced since it was first introduced.  Since November 2019 it has been a requirement for all eligible prescriptions to be issued from general practice via EPS.

There is an EPS dashboard that provides up to date data about deployment and usage.

What you need to know and do

The most comprehensive and up to date information for users of the EPS can be found on the NHS England webpages (see the link in the first paragraph above).
