Nursing and midwifery quality improvement networks

To support the delivery of the NHS Long Term Plan’s ambition for quality and the National Patient Safety Strategy, NHS England have designed and developed two national nursing and midwifery quality improvement networks. Both networks also have a key role in supporting implementation of NHS IMPACT – Improving Patient Care Together priorities.

  • A Nursing and Midwifery Leaders Quality Improvement Network to unite senior nurses and midwives from across the profession. This network is aimed at nursing and midwifery leaders with direct responsibility for quality improvement in their role. It provides them a platform to influence national policy and practice, creating a system wide approach for improvement.
  • A Quality Improvement (QI) Network for Early Career and Newly Qualified Nurses and Midwives to support them in developing their knowledge, leadership, skills, and experience in quality improvement, and its application in practice. Expressions of interest are welcomed from nurses and midwives who are within 5 years from qualification or NMC registration.

The networks raise the profile of the safety critical and pivotal role nurses and midwives play, acknowledging their unique contribution to the delivery of high-quality care, that is safe, effective and person centred and achieves the best outcomes and experiences.

Established with high levels of engagement and participation, the networks are creating a supportive learning environment, that is developing and investing in our senior leaders and the future generation of leaders, contributing to the retention of nurses and midwives.

The networks cross organisational boundaries and represent multiple partners across the health and care system. The networks recognise the integration of health and social care systems across England and provide an opportunity to support Integrated Care Systems with their shared commitment to improving quality through supporting the nursing and midwifery workforce.
