CNO National Shared Professional Decision-Making Council
The first national CNO Shared Professional Decision-Making Council was established in May 2020 with a number of colleagues from the point of care. This council meets virtually with Ruth May, Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for England every two weeks. The council members discuss and debate the relevant professional, clinical and operational matters that are important to them and to their colleagues.
Established at pace in order to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic the first national CNO Shared Professional Decision-Making Council nominations were invited from organisations taking part in the CNO Nursing and Midwifery Excellence programme where a foundational knowledge and experience of the shared professional decision-making and collective leadership approaches were already understood.
Executive Directors of Nursing at these organisations were invited to nominate one member of staff sit on the virtual council, and were encouraged to consider colleagues with a strong clinical focus at the point of care and who come from a variety of clinical and practice backgrounds across the system.
Membership

The Chair and Deputy Chair roles of the council were self-nominated and then ratified and meeting topics are proposed by council members. The Nursing and Midwifery System Transformation Team can be contacted on england.1professionalvoice@nhs.net for any queries or further information.
The Nursing and Midwifery Catalogue of Change will be continually updated with new case studies, led by council members as they meet, discuss and agree shared learning and experiences aligned to the pandemic.
