Transforming Participation in Health and Care has been developed by NHS England with a wide range of stakeholders and partners and its purpose is to support commissioners to improve individual and public participation and to better understand and respond to the needs of the communities they serve.

NHS England has developed some bite-size guides to support patient and public participation in the NHS. These guides are linked to the Transforming participation in Health and Social Care guidance (published September 2013). They form the first batch of a number of planned bite-size resources, more will follow throughout the year.

The guides aim to support Clinical Commissioning Groups and others to plan and deliver good patient and public participation.

Videos of our board meetings, agendas and papers are all made available to the public. We also stream our board meeting allowing people to watch them live.

Five ways to get involved

NHS England is committed to working and engaging with patients, carers and the public in a wide range of ways.  Ensuring that people’s views are heard at all levels and across all parts of the healthcare system is essential for creating and delivering better health and care services. Why not get involved in the following ways:

  1. The NHS belongs to the people: a call to action – NHS England’s call to action to staff, public and politicians to help the NHS  meet future demand and tackle its funding gap through ‘honest and realistic’ debate
  2. Improving general practice – a call to action.
  3. See what other surveys and consultations NHS England is running at the moment
  4. Over the next few months NHS England will be developing approaches and networks to ensure that people’s input can be sought, heard and acted on.
