Orange Button Scheme

The Orange Button Community Scheme in Lancashire and South Cumbria has achieved a significant milestone having signed up 2,500 members.

The suicide prevention scheme, which launched in September 2020, sees Orange Button ‘wearers’ train to be able to listen to and support people who are struggling and are having thoughts of suicide, and signpost them to appropriate services.

Those with the training typically display their orange buttons on their clothing to let people around them know that they are available to help.

The Orange Button training is delivered by the likes of Every Life Matters and Lancashire Mind, and gives people the skills to identify when people around them are showing signs of mental health concerns and be able to support a person before they have further thoughts of harm. It also gives you self-care information to look after your own mental health whilst supporting those around you.

More information about the scheme is available at www.healthierlsc.co.uk/OrangeButtonScheme-1 and if you live and work in Lancashire and South Cumbria your training can be booked for individuals and workplaces by contacting Lancashire Mind. Full details here.

Cardiac Network secures £750,000 through Elective Care Funding for Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery Recovery

The Cardiac Network has successfully secured £750,000 of funding as part of the elective care recovery funding provided by NHSX, with the purpose of supporting the national programmes for heart disease, cardiovascular disease prevention and cardiac pathway improvement programme.  The funding will be used to extend the use of telehealth to improve the health and wellbeing of up to 2000 cardiology patients on elective cardiac surgery waiting lists.

Cardiology patients on elective cardiac surgery waiting lists can deteriorate and then present via acute services as urgent inpatients facing increased surgical risk. Remote monitoring will be used to identify the patients at need and allow for tertiary-care led interventions to prevent deterioration in the first instance. Remote monitoring will also enhance recovery following treatment and reduce the risks of complications and readmissions post-operatively.  This “prehabilitation” and remote enhanced recovery will be utilising the existing telehealth infrastructure for monitoring, support, education and alerting partners on the care pathway to any patient deterioration.
