Thank you for your interest in becoming a patient and public voice (PPV) partner on one of the groups which co-ordinates or provides oversight or assurance to an area of NHS England’s specialised services.

The specialised services commissioned by NHS England are grouped into 6 national programmes of care:

Each of these programmes of care (PoCs) have associated clinical reference groups (CRGs). Most of the CRGs are linked to specific PoCs for guidance and oversight. Some programmes stand alone.

Requirements of the role

  • Must be able to commit to the time commitment as outlined in the role advert
  • Meetings are mostly online and take place during working hours
  • Any in-person meetings are likely to be in London
  • There are three mandatory online training courses which attract the honorarium
  • These roles are recruited for a tenure of up to 4 years

Key responsibilities of patient and public voice partners

  • To regularly participate in online meetings
  • To prepare for the meetings by reading and reviewing papers
  • Bring the perspectives of patients, carers and the public relevant to the work of the group rather than represent a particular condition or interest
  • Provide ‘critical friend’ challenge as part of the group
  • Manage any conflicts of interest

About you

  • Able to think clearly and objectively when dealing with emotive issues
  • Prepared to contribute actively to the discussions and work the group
  • Able to absorb complex information
  • Ability to work effectively and constructively with senior multi stakeholder colleagues
  • Able to communicate and debate with others at all levels
  • Personal integrity and commitment to openness, inclusiveness and high standards
  • Able to maintain confidentiality at all times

Desirable knowledge and experience

  • Strong commitment to maintaining a patient focus in the commissioning of health services
  • Understanding of the legal framework and relevant guidance relating to specialised health commissioning
  • Good understanding of public service values and accountability
  • Understanding and interest in specialised health services issues, NHS England and the wider environment in which it operates
  • Experience of working in a committee setting

Involvement fee (honorarium) and expenses

PPV partner roles attract an involvement fee (honorarium) which is paid through the NHS England payroll system.

NHS England will reimburse any reasonable expenses in line with the policy on working with PPV partners.

Involvement fee payments are subject to statutory deductions including tax and national insurance (NI), dependent on earnings and tax code.

You can claim an honorarium of £75 per half day and £150 per full day (unless you are attending in paid work time).

The honorarium covers your travel time, if required, pre-reading and meeting time. If you receive state benefits, check if these will be affected.

Support for PPV partners

New PPV partners are invited to an online welcome meeting with the Specialised Commissioning Engagement team.

New PPV members are briefed ahead of their first group meeting by the lead commissioner.

There are a range of optional learning opportunities available to PPV partners.

If you are employed by an organisation which works in a relevant area, you are welcome to apply in a personal capacity. Appointments will be based on the experience and knowledge of the individual applying; the role of PPV partners is not to represent a particular organisation.

Selection for interview will be based on the content of your application form.

Interviews will take place online via Microsoft (MS) Teams.

All applicants will receive a successful or unsuccessful notification.
