Use of exemptions within the Human Medicines Regulations 2012 by Orthoptists
Further to an announcement from George Freeman MP (Minister for Life Sciences, Department of Health) on Friday 26 February 2016, orthoptists are able to supply and administer medicines under exemptions, following successful completion of a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) approved training programme.
NHS England hosted a public consultation on proposals to allow Orthoptists to sell, supply & administer medicines under exemptions within Human Medicines Regulations 2012 across the United Kingdom between February and April 2015.

- Practice guidance for orthoptists for the supply and administration of medicines under exemptions – Developed by the British and Irish Orthoptic Society and provides guidance around the use of exemptions by orthoptists.
- Outline curriculum framework for education programmes to prepare orthoptists to use exemptions – The British and Irish Orthoptic Society has developed an outline curriculum aimed at education providers with an interest in developing education programmes and individuals interested in education programmes for orthoptists to use exemptions.
