Wessex programme gets patients fit for cancer treatment

We know cancer patients who take part in exercise programmes in hospital before surgery tend to make a faster recovery.   The Wessex Cancer Alliance is researching whether community-based pre-surgery fitness programmes and psychological support can boost patients’ recovery too.

‘WestFit’ will recruit patients preparing for cancer surgery onto fitness and emotional support programmes that vary according to the patients’ treatment plans, to test whether this boosts recovery rates after surgery. The programmes, which are overseen by trained fitness instructors, will run in the community, including at gyms and cancer support centres, until March 2019. Subject to evaluation the best-performing programmes will be rolled-out across the Wessex Cancer Alliance region for further evaluation.
