Think Drink – how patient feedback reduced patient fasting times before surgery

Trust/Practice: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust

This film outlines a project delivered by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust which has reduced patient fasting times before surgery from an average of nine hours to, currently, an average of 3.5 hours. The project was prompted by patient feedback about the discomfort of fasting and problems of dehydration, so staff looked at the surgical and dietary needs and developed processes to tailor fasting to each patient’s situation. Staff explain how they made the project a success and what the benefits have been.
