Can we use the Star of Life symbol?
The Star of Life is used in some countries as a symbol denoting ambulances, paramedics and other emergency medical services. Copyright in the symbol is believed to belong to the United States Government, which seems to be happy to allow such use. However, NHS England has been unable to establish this position with certainty, so if NHS organisations choose to use this symbol, they do so at their own risk.
If your NHS organisation chooses to use the Star of Life symbol it shouldn’t compete with, or detract from, the NHS Identity. It should not be placed too close to your NHS organisation’s logo (or ambulance crown badge) or be positioned where you would expect to see your NHS logo (or ambulance crown badge) i.e. top right.
