James Allen, Chief Pharmacist University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust

For James Allen, the NHS is built on a simple but powerful idea: that everyone deserves high-quality care, regardless of their background or circumstances. It’s a belief that drives everything his team does.

As Chief Pharmacist at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, James leads one of the most wide-ranging services in the organisation. His pharmacy teams work alongside doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to ensure patients receive the right medicines, safely and at the right time, whether they are in hospital, in a clinic, or at home. The service spans everything from advising on complex treatments and supporting wards, to managing the procurement and supply of medicines across the Trust, supporting clinical trials, and helping patients access innovative therapies in areas such as advanced therapies and cancer care.

But it is the shift in where and how that care is delivered that makes James’s work particularly significant. Through outpatient antibiotic therapy and homecare services, his team enables patients to continue treatment safely outside of hospital, often in their own homes, maintaining their independence, staying connected with family and daily life, and avoiding the disruption a hospital stay can bring. A new regional aseptic hub is further strengthening this capability, producing medicines in a consistent, ready-to-use format that supports community teams to deliver treatment safely and reliably beyond the hospital walls.

Digital innovation is also central to the service’s ambition, with investment in automation and electronic prescribing systems improving safety and enabling better clinical decisions.

“I feel a deep sense of pride in working alongside colleagues who go above and beyond every day,” James reflects. “It is that shared commitment that continues to inspire me in my role.”

James and his team are a compelling example of how the hospital to community shift is being delivered in practice — bringing treatment closer to patients, on their terms, without compromising on safety or quality.
