Tom Hook

Analyst, NHS England South East

Some careers in the NHS begin on the frontline; others begin behind the scenes, helping the system understand itself so it can serve patients better. Tom Hook, Analyst for NHS England in the South East, has spent the early years of his career doing exactly that — turning complex data into insight that strengthens services, reduces inequalities and ensures emerging issues are spotted early.

Tom first joined NHS England as a university student during the pandemic, stepping into one of the most challenging periods in the organisation’s history. He was immediately immersed in vital work supporting reporting on COVID‑19 vaccinations and hospital bed occupancy — analysis that helped guide decisions at pace and under pressure. After completing his degree, he returned to NHS England and now covers a wide range of areas including primary care, public health and community services.

His work helps teams understand demand, performance, variation and risk across the region, ensuring that decisions are grounded in evidence and that patients ultimately benefit. For Tom, the reward lies in knowing that his analysis supports better care, strengthens prevention and helps reduce inequalities across the South East.

As the NHS marks its 78th birthday and the first anniversary of the 10‑Year Health Plan, Tom’s contribution reflects the shift towards smarter, more proactive use of data — ensuring the NHS can respond quickly, plan effectively and improve outcomes for the communities it serves.
