James McGoldrick, Speech and Language Therapist, Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust

As a speech and language therapist, James McGoldrick’s passion is supporting people to continue to communicate and take part in the things that matter to them following a stroke or disease progression.

Working across the Community Neuro Rehab Team and Adult Speech and Language Therapy Team sees him helping people with acquired brain injuries, spinal injuries, relapses in multiple sclerosis and people with Parkinson’s disease, within their home.

“Working as a speech and language therapist has been an incredible journey, and I’ve met some amazing people along the way. Supporting individuals with communication needs is my real passion. I love helping people find ways to continue to communicate and take part in the things that matter to them, especially in their homes and communities where they feel most comfortable.

“I also love involving families and partners in that process, because communication is about more than the individual; it’s something we can improve together.

“I feel lucky to work with such inspiring colleagues in a team where I can bring myself to work and where I’m valued and supported to grow. I am very proud to work in the NHS. I feel part of something so special, improving lives and making a real difference by supporting people in their own homes and helping them achieve the best possible outcomes.”

James’s role supports the shift from hospital to community by ensuring continuity of care beyond acute settings – providing ongoing support to patients with their communication and swallowing needs, within their homes, after leaving hospital and equipping families and carers to support loved ones at home.

By promoting communication, independence, and participation, speech and language therapists help reduce reliance on hospital services and improve long-term outcomes, aligning with the NHS vision of more integrated, person-centred care closer to home.
