Louise King – Lead Nurse, Immunisation Service, Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust
When a meningitis outbreak swept through Canterbury in early 2025, Louise King and her team had no time to hesitate. Within days, they had mobilised a rapid response that delivered urgent antibiotics and vaccinations to more than 10,000 people, protecting young lives, reassuring families, and demonstrating exactly what prevention-focused NHS care looks like under pressure.
Louise is Lead Nurse within the Immunisation Service at Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust, leading nursing teams delivering vaccination programmes across Kent. Her work spans the full spectrum of preventative care: from overseeing the routine national vaccination schedule to running outreach programmes for underserved and hard-to-reach communities who might otherwise miss out on vital protection.
“I am incredibly proud to be part of a team that makes a real difference in preventing illness rather than just treating it,” she says. “It is much better for individuals, families and communities to stay well, and we are privileged to work alongside passionate, talented colleagues who share the same goal of improving health outcomes for everyone.”
That goal drives everything Louise does. Building trust within communities, particularly those with lower vaccination uptake, takes patience, compassion, and a consistent visible presence. Louise provides all three, understanding that sustainable prevention is as much about relationships as it is about clinical expertise.
The Canterbury meningitis response brought that philosophy into sharp focus. A swift, coordinated, community-facing intervention prevented what could have been a devastating outbreak from becoming far worse.
“This proactive approach not only reduces the burden of disease but also improves long-term health outcomes across the population,” says Louise. “My work plays a key role in shifting healthcare from a focus on treating illness to actively preventing it.”
