Billy Keays

Facilities Assistant, Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust

Some NHS careers begin with a single moment of inspiration. Others simply begin — and continue, quietly and steadily, for decade after decade.

Billy Keays has been a Facilities Assistant at Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust for more than 44 years, and his dedication to the people and places he serves shows no sign of slowing down.

“I have dedicated more than 44 years to facilities, and I still genuinely enjoy my job,” says Billy. “I love working across different areas of the hospital and meeting new people every day. One of the best parts of my role has always been staying active and building strong connections with colleagues across the organisation, supporting so many different departments as part of a team.”

Facilities assistants are the backbone of safe, effective hospital care. From maintaining clean and hygienic environments to supporting catering, portering and stock management, their work ensures that every part of the hospital runs smoothly and safely — day in, day out. They support patients, visitors and staff. It is demanding, hands-on work that requires flexibility, attention to detail and a genuine commitment to the people around you.

For Billy, the variety has always been one of the greatest rewards.

“Over the years, I’ve seen the hospital change and grow in so many ways. From working in different blocks to taking on new tasks and adapting to decades of change, I’ve really valued the variety and experience my role has given me.”

The relationships he has built over four decades speak to something deeper than loyalty — they reflect a sense of belonging and shared purpose that sits at the very heart of the NHS.

“The relationships I’ve built within the NHS mean a great deal to me, and even after more than four decades, I still look forward to coming to work each day. Being part of the NHS has been incredibly important to me.”

As the NHS marks its 78th birthday and the first anniversary of the 10 Year Health Plan, Billy’s story is a reminder that transformation is built on foundations — and that the people who maintain those foundations, every single day, are every bit as vital as those who design them.
