Lucy Harold
Biomedical Science Degree Apprentice, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Behind every diagnosis, every treatment decision, and every moment of clinical certainty, there is a laboratory. And in Oxford University Hospitals’ Microbiology Department, Lucy Harold is already playing her part in making that possible — at just the start of her career.
Lucy is a Biomedical Science Degree Apprentice at OUH, combining her studies at the University of Westminster with hands-on training in diagnostic microbiology. She has been recognised for balancing the demands of a rigorous degree alongside the pace of a busy laboratory, all while contributing meaningfully to patient care from day one.
It is a role that demands precision, dedication, and the ability to work under pressure — qualities Lucy has demonstrated in abundance. Every sample processed, every result returned, every diagnosis supports a clinical team somewhere in the hospital to make faster, safer decisions for their patients.
The privilege of that contribution is something Lucy doesn’t take for granted.
“I love working in the NHS and feel incredibly privileged to come to work each day knowing that I can make a difference to people’s lives,” she says. “Being able to provide an invaluable service at such a young age is something I never take for granted.”
She speaks with genuine pride about her department and the people around her. “The team works tirelessly behind the scenes to support patient care, and being part of such a dedicated and hardworking department is both rewarding and inspiring.”
For Lucy, the NHS is something bigger than any single role or organisation. “To me, the NHS represents community, compassion, and teamwork. Every member of staff, regardless of their role, shares a common purpose: caring for others. To play even a small part in that mission is a true honour.”
As the NHS marks its 78th birthday and the first anniversary of the 10 Year Health Plan, Lucy Harold represents something important: the next generation of NHS talent, already delivering, already committed, already proud to serve.
