Clive’s story

Clive and Lynne JonesRetired church minister Clive Jones is just one of 160,000 people at risk of developing diabetes in Kent and Medway.  But thanks to a diabetes prevention programme the Staplehurst resident has a new lease of life.

The 69 year old was diagnosed with heart palpitations and high blood sugar levels last summer. His GP advised him to make some lifestyle changes and referred him to the local Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme.

After just a few months on the programme Clive had lost 18lbs, his blood sugar levels were decreasing and he was regularly swimming, gardening, cycling and walking.

Clive, who ministered at churches in Staplehurst and New Malden for almost 40 years, said: “My wife Lynne and I are part-time carers for our young granddaughter Lylah, so it’s hugely important that I stay fit and active.”

“A minister’s life can be quite sedentary and I guess I’d slipped into some bad habits. This was the warning shot I needed to lose weight and control my sugar intake to ensure I’m around for many more years to enjoy life with my family.”

Clive joined the monthly Healthier You sessions in Marden to discuss all aspects of preventing Type 2 diabetes. The course covered nutrition and exercise and suggested behavioural changes to maintain a healthy weight and become more physically active.

Clive said: “It was really helpful to have the support of the group and there’s a friendly camaraderie. I feel so much better for making just some simple life changes and thank the programme and my Lord for giving me the motivation to change.”
