Better facilities at Liverpool’s Walton Centre

The neurology and neurosurgery specialist trust has cut payroll errors, reduced training duplication and improved on-call facilities.

The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust has made strong progress in year 1 of the 10 Point Plan, with a focus on practical changes that make a real difference to resident doctors’ lives.

Named leads are now in place for resident doctor issues, with clear reporting routes through resident doctor forums, the Medical Education Group, the People Group and the trust’s board. The induction handbook has been updated, annual leave guidance is in place, and doctors’ mess facilities are well maintained.

Payroll error rates are below 1%, mandatory training duplication has been reduced, and expense claims are now easier to process.

Key priorities for Year 2 include completing installation of 24-hour hot food vending machines, improving on-call parking options, and strengthening resident doctor engagement through regular forums and direct contact with peer representatives.

Clinical leaders will communicate more directly with resident doctors and work will continue to promote a positive culture around exception reporting. Annual leave policies are due to be reviewed to make sure they are fair and consistent.
