Improving rest, safety and training in west London

West London NHS Trust is investing in wellbeing, accommodation and training to create a safer and more supportive experience for its resident doctors.

The trust has taken a coordinated approach to improving resident doctors’ day-to-day experience, combining practical support with changes to training and its workplace culture.

A major investment in accommodation at the Lakeside Mental Health Unit provides safe, high‑quality rest facilities while on duty. On‑call resident doctors also receive a £10 meal allowance and access to a funded taxi service if they are too tired to drive home after a shift.

The trust is also working to create a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment, including a safe learning charter and training on sexual safety for both resident doctors and trainers.

Resident doctor representatives are involved in educational governance at local and trust levels, helping to shape the support available.

Training is being strengthened through a structured educator development programme focused on diversity, fostering positive learning cultures, mentoring, and addressing burnout. It includes support for less than full-time trainees and those returning to training.

All staff are offered a wellbeing day, with flexibility to carry over annual leave in some circumstances to support rest and recovery, and the trust now reimburses study leave expenses at the point of course booking. The postgraduate team engages with new resident doctors to transfer mandatory training and address individual needs early.

A trust‑wide rota group, chaired by the Deputy Chief Medical Officer and involving resident representatives, has begun work on a major review of on‑call rotas to ensure they are safe, sustainable and support resident wellbeing.
