Safer travel and simpler admin in north east London

Strong leadership engagement has delivered better security, smoother processes and stronger support at North East London NHS Foundation Trust.

Doctors travelling between sites after hours now have access to cabs. Fob access to A&E has been introduced at King George, with Whipps Cross under review. Dedicated rest spaces, on-call rooms, and improved food provision are available across Goodmayes, King George, and Whipps Cross. All December work schedules were on time, and payroll errors are falling.

Behind the scenes, processes have been simplified to save time and reduce friction. Mandatory training records are now submitted by email for the training team to upload, exception reporting has been streamlined and actively encouraged, and a new study leave process supports earlier reimbursement. Wellbeing and education updates are now standing items at consultant and service business meetings.

Strong leadership engagement is underpinning all of this. Senior leaders including the Acting Chief Medical Officer and Deputy Chief Executive attend the Resident Doctor Forum, ensuring issues are heard and acted on quickly. Resident doctors are encouraged to chair and lead the forum themselves, helping to build their leadership skills and allowing the doctors’ experiences to shape any changes. A peer representative, BMA Industrial Relations Officer, and Guardian of Safe Working provide additional representation and support.
