Wellbeing days boosting morale for doctors
Wellbeing days at Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust are helping connect doctors with their colleagues.
Held twice a year, the informal sessions bring together senior leaders and all resident doctors in a relaxed setting, away from the formality of traditional meetings. Activities include sports, creative sessions, games and light-hearted competitions, often held at external venues, with a focus on relaxation, fun and teamwork.
The days have helped break down traditional hierarchies, creating space for doctors to connect with colleagues they may not usually see — including those working in community settings. Doctors have found it easier to raise concerns about training, safety and wellbeing in this more open environment.
The initiative is improving morale, reducing isolation and building a stronger, more positive working culture across the trust.
The days are organised by trainee wellbeing representatives alongside the medical education team, with strong backing from consultant supervisors who help ensure doctors can attend while safe staffing levels are maintained.
The programme shows how relatively simple, low-cost interventions can have a real and lasting impact on workforce wellbeing and team cohesion.
