Work schedules getting to doctors faster at London trust
Smart vending machines and microwaves have been installed at Guy’s and St Thomas’ to provide doctors with access to healthy food around the clock.
On-call rooms have been refurbished, with better sleeping and hygiene facilities, and lockers have been added in doctors’ offices for secure storage.
Some office spaces are also being converted into welcoming break areas, with new furniture, improved lighting, and kitchen facilities, and it is now easier for staff to report estates and facilities issues in real time.
A new ‘Doctors’ hub’ on the intranet, accessible from mobile devices and developed in response to feedback from resident doctors, is making it easier to access key information, guidance, and support in one place, improving awareness of available facilities and processes.
Rota communication has also improved significantly – the current 3-month average for sending generic work schedules at least 8 weeks in advance is 98% and further work is underway to improve how quickly personalised work schedules are sent. And the Trust has significantly improved how quickly expenses are reimbursed for resident doctors attending approved training courses.
Looking ahead, the Trust is exploring further improvements including support for resident doctors returning from maternity leave such as lactation spaces and fridges for expressed breast milk— reflecting a continued commitment to a more supportive and dignified working environment for every resident doctor.
