New rest spaces and faster expenses for Bolton doctors
Bolton NHS Foundation Trust has introduced a range of practical changes to support its resident doctors, from improving everyday facilities to strengthening leadership and training.
A dedicated resident doctor peer lead and a deputy medical director have been appointed to provide clear leadership accountability. A non-executive director has also been appointed to provide ongoing independent input, and Bolton has established the North-West Resident Doctor Peer Lead Forum to share learning across the region.
Doctors can now access improved locker spaces, a refurbished doctors’ mess located in the main hospital link corridor and a new rest area with recliner chairs – available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Work is under way to introduce e-rostering and self-rostering, giving doctors greater control over their working hours. Expenses can now be claimed as soon as a course has been paid for, rather than waiting until completion.
The Safe Learning Environment Charter audit has been piloted in critical care, with plans to extend this across the hospital. Teaching sessions keep resident doctors informed and a regular newsletter from the Medical Director connects them to the wider organisation.
A resident doctor survey is helping to shape a renewed action plan, which will have named owners and clear deadlines.
