Manchester trust puts safety and wellbeing first

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust has launched the ‘Too Tired to Drive’ scheme and protected training time for resident doctors.

The trust’s new “Too Tired to Drive” scheme gives doctors access to rest facilities, accommodation and funded transport if they are too exhausted to travel home safely after long shifts.

The provision of hot food is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and has been expanded to cover all the trust’s main sites including North Manchester General Hospital and Trafford General Hospital.

Support for resident doctors who are breastfeeding or infant feeding has been improved, with clearer communications about available facilities and better guidance for managers. Protected time for mandatory training has been built into rotas, with doctors involved in making that training more relevant and less burdensome.

All Royal College self-development time is now supported within rotas, so doctors can meet professional development requirements within their working hours. Access to car parking permits has also been streamlined, making the process simpler and more reliable.
