VTE risk assessment 2024/25

This section of the website provides information on the number and proportion of admitted adult patients in England who have been risk assessed for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in 2024/25 (April 2024 to March 2025).

Note:
NHS England changed the frequency of publication from monthly to quarterly with effect from April 2015 (providers are still required to collect data on VTE risk assessments monthly; however, they will not need to submit all three months data until the end of the quarter).

Background

The mandatory data collection started in June 2010; it was paused during the pandemic and following a consultation process, has been reinstated and is ongoing until further notice.

The data collection asks for the following information:

  1. number of patients aged 16 and over admitted as acute inpatients in the month who have been risk assessed for VTE on admission to hospital using the criteria in the NICE guidance
  2. total number of inpatients aged 16 and over admitted in the month.

The percentage of inpatients aged 16 and over admitted in the month assessed for risk of VTE on admission is automatically calculated from items (1) and (2).

The collection opens on the first working day of the month following the end of the quarter data is being submitted for. The trusts are required to upload their data on VTE risk assessment onto SDCS and signed off before the submission deadline which is the last working day of the same month.
