Urgent and Emergency Care Daily Situation Reports 2023-24
2023-24 reporting
Weekly updates will commence on Thursday 30 November 2023 and will continue every Thursday at 09:30 through the winter, with a final publication on Friday 5 April 2024 covering the week ending Sunday 31 March 2024.
During the festive period, due to bank holidays, publications will be made at 09:30 on Friday morning. Therefore publications for the week ending 24 and 31 December will be made the following Friday.
This page contains management data which has been collected on a rapid turn-round basis from the NHS. The speed of the collection only permits minimal validation to be undertaken but the data is considered ‘fit-for-purpose’.

Note on beds data
Please note that the beds figures included in this publication are collected on a different basis (both in terms of organisations covered and definitions) to those published in the COVID-19 data section, so are not comparable.
Hospital capacity has had to be organised in new ways as a result of the pandemic to treat COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients separately and safely in meeting the enhanced Infection Prevention Control measures. This results in beds and staff being deployed differently from in previous years in both emergency and elective settings within the hospital. As a result, caution should be exercised in comparing overall occupancy rates between this year and previous years.
Comparing data to December 2020
Note that prior to week ending 20 December 2020 the data did not include 13 acute trusts (trusts without A&E departments). For ease of comparison to earlier periods, we have included two totals on the files, both with and without these 13 trusts. These trusts can be found listed at the bottom of each spreadsheet table.
UEC daily sitrep time series
In the publication we have split general and acute open and occupied beds, as well as beds closed due to diarrhoea and vomiting (D&V)/norovirus-like symptoms (unoccupied) into adults and paediatrics. Therefore, if comparing to previous years users would need to compare the total (adult plus paediatrics). From November 2021 we have collected metrics relating to infection prevention including the number of beds occupied by patients with laboratory confirmed influenza in general and acute, as well as critical care. In addition we have collected the number of beds closed to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) for paediatric patients, as well as those unoccupied.
Ambulance arrivals and handover delays previously reported from the UEC daily sitrep are now available in the daily ambulance collection time series.
A guidance document is available here: Submit your daily situation report (sitrep).

Daily ambulance collection time series
Please note that from 1st October 2023 the specification and definitions for ambulance handovers were updated to improve standardisation of approach. This includes clarification of clock start and stop times, measuring cohorting of patients and the inclusion of handovers at both ED and non-ED.

COVID daily sitrep time series
Note: Not all trusts have submitted absence data for every day. The impact of the missing data submissions should be borne in mind when interpreting both the level of national and regional figures and the recent trend.
Further information on the daily COVID sitrep collection can be found here: COVID-19 hospital activity.

NHS 111 IUC ADC time series
Further information on the 111 data collections can be found here: Integrated urgent care aggregate data collection (IUCADC including NHS111).
Please note, that as explained on that page, changes to the way that the weekly 111 data are collected mean that a number of data items have amended definitions and hence cannot be compared to the data collected in previous years.
Acute discharge weekly sitrep data
The Acute Discharge Weekly Situation Report (SitRep) highlights daily discharge figures across England. This includes all inpatients 18 and over including critical care patients but excluding paediatrics, maternity, and deceased patients.
This includes data for acute trusts with a type 1 A&E department.
Mental Health Trusts, specialised Trusts (including Children’s and Women’s Trusts) are not in scope of this collection.
Daily data is published on a weekly basis.
Data is unvalidated management information.
Guidance on criteria to reside is available in Annex D of the Hospital Discharge and Community Support: Policy and Operating Model.
